“Let me change my clothes.” I closed my computer and stood up.
“Wear something that shows a little skin. Jo tells me our sales spike when you wear your Wonder Bra,” Mom said matter-of-factly.
“I am not on the menu.” I huffed, pushed out my chest, and rolled my eyes for dramatic effect.
“Wear those jeans you bought—you know, the ones that cost a couple hundred dollars—a black bra, and one of those white tank T-shirts you wear around the house.”
“The I’m easy, come and get me, baby, Latina-from-the-hood look? Seriously? That’s not a positive image for the next generation of Latinas, Mom.”
“What’s wrong with showing off your curves to sell a few extra bowls of chili? Besides, you want to look your best in case that sexy friend of yours shows up again.” She winked and ran her hand over my unruly locks.
Gabe Mercer, the black cloud in my sunny day. He was six foot five, a solid mass of goodness, with topaz eyes that melted the skin off my bones every time he fluttered his come-hither lashes in my direction. He was the kind of guy that had you at Hello, but when he left your bed—and he’d left many—you started a blog and wrote sappy love poems the rest of your days and ended up marrying your dentist’s son, Wilber Puck, the one who wore coke-bottle spectacles, ill-fitting tan trousers, and a checkered shirt.
“He’s a professional colleague and nothing more. Stop rolling your eyes at me.”
The screen door opened and banged twice against the doorjamb before stopping. Tia Jo had arrived. She was the other half of the dynamic duo. With her arrival, my chances of winning withered. She winked and blew me a kiss as she had been doing for as long as I could remember. I listened to her Asics as they thumped in double-time across the tile floor. She took her position as second lieutenant alongside Mom at the kitchen sink.
“Youth is wasted on the young. Would it kill you to wear your Wonder Bra, sashay around the park tables, and show off those pearly whites of yours that cost your parents fifteen thousand dollars to straighten?” Tia Jo said.

“I know you love that little girl, Lauren. And I know you love your brother enough to not want his daughter to leave this family. Joe wanted us to take care of her. He said so in his will.”

“He didn’t mean us, together,” she said. “In fact, I’m pretty sure Joe would freak out if he thought you were making a move on me. He’s been warning me away from you since you guys were roommates in college.”

Mack waved his hand as if to clear away her concerns. “I’m not making a move on you. This is business. And Joe would understand that extraordinary circumstances warrant unusual solutions.”

“But we’re not married, Mack.”

“It’s just a piece of paper,” he said, shrugging. “We can go down to the courthouse this very afternoon and make it official. It won’t be a real marriage, of course. It would be in name only.”

“It wouldn’t be a marriage in name only, Mack,” she said. “Don’t you see? If we’re living together to raise Callie, it’ll be…it’ll feel very real. At least to me.”

He leaned in so close she had to tilt her head up to keep looking into his eyes. “Is that a problem? We’ve known each other for a long time. I think we could take care of Callie together, at least until Joe and Marisol return. We don’t need to really be in love to get a piece of paper that says we’re man and wife.”

Hmm. What he said made sense. They didn’t need to be in love to get married, not really. Love. It would be so amazing to find a man who’d love her, who’d want to stay with her forever. Not someone like her ex-boyfriend Steve who had waited until his sister had a baby to realize he wanted his own children, something she could never give him. Or any man.

Could this be her only chance to get married?

“For as long as I’ve known you,” she said, “you’ve always said you’d never settle down. Ever.”

“I never thought this would happen, either. Things change. I have a penthouse in Manhattan—plenty of room for you and Callie to move in. We only need to be married until her parents come back. Then we’ll have to be legally separated for a year before we can divorce.”

Divorce? “How do you know about that?”

He laughed. “Thomas schooled me on the legalities of marriage when Joe and Marisol got together, and what it would mean for our joint assets. But it shouldn’t be a big deal,” he said, “unless you have some boyfriend I don’t know about waiting in the wings, wanting to marry you, instead?”

She blushed. Damn him, he always made her blush. “No. But—what about Callie?”

“We’ll share joint custody, of course.” Mack smiled at her as if that solved everything.

“No.” Lauren shook her head resolutely, tearing her eyes away from his handsome face. “This is crazy. People don’t do this kind of thing anymore.”

“What kind of thing?” he asked, amusement creeping into his voice.

Why did he have to be so good-looking?

“A…a marriage of convenience.”

“Stop thinking of it as a real marriage,” Mack said. “Joe was my best friend. I have an obligation to do what he would have wanted me to do. So just marry me and help me raise Callie, like your brother wanted.”

He tilted her chin up, forcing her to look in his chocolate-colored eyes. “Please,” he said softly.

“Marry me, Lauren. For Callie’s sake. Put up with me for one year.”

“Everything’s just business with you, Mack.”

Mack’s lips curved into a small smile. “It sounds like you don’t want to miss out on the other benefits of matrimony.”

“Other…benefits?” The words came out breathlessly as images from her dream of him ran through her mind.

He ran one large hand down her cheek, smoothing her hair behind her ear. The light touch tickled her senses, lighting a fire deep within her. “You know,” he murmured. “Benefits.”

“I can’t…I can’t think of any benefits.” Her skin tingled where his hand lingered. His mouth, mere inches from her lips, became the focus of her world.

“I can.”

EXCERPT
In the distance she saw it—the slightest ripple and flash in the forest preserve just across the lawn. She had just walked through there earlier that morning on her way into school. Lil jumped in her seat. No one seemed to notice. Her eyes widened. Just beyond the trees, a figure stood tall in blue jeans and a blue-striped button-down shirt.
Who are you? She shook her head as she glanced back at her English teacher, Ms. Lee. Her back was to Lil, so she shifted in her seat and peered out the window at the stranger not more than a dozen yards away. He approached through the trees until he came as far as the clearing. He leaned his back onto a trunk and nodded toward Lil, just once. Lil pinched herself, making sure she was awake. He gestured for her to come outside, letting her know he was there, for her.

Only fifty years left before vampires rule the world.

When Dallas police detective Cami Davis joined the city's vampire unit, she planned to use the job as a stepping-stone to a better position in the department.

But she didn't know then what she knows now: there's a silent war raging between humans and vampires, and the vampires are winning.

So with the help of a disaffected vampire and an ex-cop addict, Cami is going undercover, determined to solve a series of recent murders, discover a way to overthrow the local Sanguinary government, and, in the process, help win the war for the human race.

But can she maintain her own humanity in the process? Or will Cami find herself, along with the rest of the world, pulled under a darkness she cannot oppose?

Excerpt

It hit me, hard, that no matter how I twisted it around in my head, Reese was going to be more than just an informant to me. I didn't know if I could trust him, this cowboy-vampire I had been thrown together with. But something about him sang to me, like a tune just out of hearing, almost recognized—a song of protection and death. And I wanted to dance to it, almost as much as I wanted to escape it.

The department wouldn't force me to stick it out, wouldn't expect me to team up with a vampire for anything more than the most superficial of connections.

I could walk out at any time.

But I wouldn't. He'd help us find and stop whoever was killing these women.

That's why I'll stay in this.

"I'll tell you everything," I said to the vampire snarling at me. "But I'll need your help."

Reese's lip dropped back down, covering the fang.

I was glad—it was easier to contemplate joining forces with him when he wasn't reminding me that he was one of the monsters.

"Talk," he said.

I shook my head. "Not here," I said, speaking quietly. How good his hearing might be was only one of the many things I didn't know about vampires.

He slid up to the bar beside me.

"We can't leave," he said, equally softly. I had to lean close to hear him.

"Why not?" I asked.

"Mendoza all but dared me to Claim you, back there." He didn't look down at me. "If I don't bleed you at least a little before we go, he'll be suspicious."

At his words, the half-healed bite mark Reese had left on my shoulder throbbed once, sending a hot pulse throughout my entire body.

I wanted the response to be revulsion.

Almost everyone who went undercover with the vamps came out addicted to their bite. The ones who could still string two sentences together, like Garrett, stayed on the force.

The others . . .

The press portrayed us as bumbling and stupid—and maybe we were. Sending detectives in against humanity's worst nightmare? We were like little kids trying to hold back the dark with matches, bound to get our fingers burned, and worse, maybe burn the house down around us.

I paused and swallowed.
