I'm
not a terribly visual writer. That's not to say that I don't have a strong
visual imagination—I just don't have to have a clear idea of what my characters
look like before I write a book. I don't keep Pinterest boards of characters,
though I wish I did. I don't cast actors for the movie of my book before I
write—in large part because I often forget what actors look like.
I do love the process of casting actors after the book is published. I always hold online release parties, and one of the games we play is "cast the book." I find that, in general, other people are better than I am at figuring out who should play my characters.
But writing Sanguinary was different, for some reason. From page one, I knew exactly who would play the characters I was writing. So for the first time ever, I actually have a cast for the dream movie of my book before the book ever comes out (this is huge, y'all).
So take a moment to scroll through my character and actor list below. Let me know what you think—are these the right choices for their roles?
All you writers out there, tell me: do you cast your characters before you write? Why or why not?
And finally, feel free to join us at the online Sanguinary release party on Facebook October 8; even if the cast is already set, we'll have lots of other games and prizes! (The party is from 6-9 p.m. Central, but feel free to drop by at any point.) Here's the Facebook link to the party; I hope to see you there! https://www.facebook.com/events/543231019140821/

Only
fifty years left before vampires rule the world.
When Dallas police detective Cami Davis joined the city's vampire unit, she planned to use the job as a stepping-stone to a better position in the department.
But she didn't know then what she knows now: there's a silent war raging between humans and vampires, and the vampires are winning.
So with the help of a disaffected vampire and an ex-cop addict, Cami is going undercover, determined to solve a series of recent murders, discover a way to overthrow the local Sanguinary government, and, in the process, help win the war for the human race.
But can she maintain her own humanity in the process? Or will Cami find herself, along with the rest of the world, pulled under a darkness she cannot oppose?
